Germination trial prac

Bek Hyland

Start Date: 2 April  2012

Aim: To test the results of germination of Acacia cardiophylla using different seed treatments.

Method:   In groups we worked together to treat the seeds before sowing.  The treatments we used were:

  1. Control seeds- no treatment given to seeds
  2. Scarified seeds - the seeds were placed in a scarification drum to sand paper seeds.
  3. Nicked seeds - using a scalpel and a tile, we nicked the end of the seed off
  4. Boiled seeds - the seeds were soaked for 24hrs in boiling water to soften the hard coating.
Using propagation mix we filled 4 punnets and sowed 10 equally treated seeds in each (ie one punnet for control seeds, one punnet for scarified seeds etc.)

The punnets were then labelled (Table 1) and placed on the mist bed in the greenhouse.

Results:

Conclusion

The treatment of seeds greatly effects the germination. In this instance Acacia cardiophylla is best treated by scarifiying or nicking.
